An Early Influence
African music started in the early colonial days and is
still popular now. The origin of African
music goes all the way back to the 1600s. During this time, Christian missions taught
music to the people in the country. African
music became popular because of this training and it made it available in a lot
of places.
Coming Together
At the end of the nineteenth century, cities like Cape Town,
became famous and attracted musicians from other countries.
This is when many types of music became liked such as marabi, gospel,
soul, and jazz. Traditional music that were
found to be the most liked in people’s homes were sotho-traditional, zulu-traditional,
tsonga-traditional, pedi-traditional, venda-traditional and xhosa-traditional. Modern
