Traditional
South Africa has the most original and different styles of African music. Because of the spread of religion, many of the traditional music types were affected. But the Sub-Saharan nations were not affected and today there are a lot of African songs that tells stories and are about celebration of important days in a person’s life.
Religion
Music plays a big part in the religious ways of
South Africans. Songs and beats celebrate life of older relatives, and fights
off the evil spirits that worries African people. Dances and ceremonies also go
along with these important songs.
Instruments
Africans used their voice as the main
instruments. Flutes, trumpets, bells, rattles, gongs, xylophones stringed instruments,
and hand drums were used a lot. The hand drum is the most important. The
Africans made several types of hand drums which they use for all different
things. The kinds of drums they make are bougarabou, tama talking drums,
djembe, water drums and many types of ngoma drums.
